Modality and Topographic Properties of Single Neurons of Cat’s Somatic Sensory Cortex1

چکیده
THE PRESENT PAPER describes some observations upon the modality and topographical attributes of single neurons of the first somatic sensory area of the cat’s cerebral cortex, the analogue of the cortex of the postcentral gyrus in the primate brain. These data, together with others upon the response latencies of the cells of different layers of the cortex to peripheral stimuli, support an hypothesis of the functional organization of this cortical area. This is that the neurons which lie in narrow vertical columns, or cylinders, extending from layer II through layer VI make up an elementary unit of organization, for they are activated by stimulation of the same single class of peripheral receptors, from almost identical peripheral receptive fields, at latencies ers. A report of these experiments was made to the American Physiological Society in September, 1955 (10, 17).

متن کاملEffect of sensory deprivation and Locus Coeruleus (LC) electrical stimulation on the response properties of layer IV barrel cortex neurons in male rats
Introduction: Barrel cortex of rodents is responsible for sensory information processing from muzzle whiskers. Locus coeruleus (LC) as the main source of norepinephrine (NE) in the cortex, is effective on the sensory information processing. Methods: Rats were divided to 2 groups. One group underwent sensory deprivation (P4) and the other group served as control and did not undergo sensory d...
متن کاملEffect of Norepinephrine depletion on induction of experience dependent plasticity in male rat barrel cortex
Introduction: Barrel cortex of rats is a part of somatosensory cortex, which receives information from facial whiskers. Vibrisectomy by sensory deprivation leads to some changes in the barrel cortex, which have been known as experience dependent plasticity. On the other hand, Norepinephrine (NE) and locus coeruleus, which is the main source of NE, influenced response properties of cortical bar...
متن کاملConvergent local identity and topographic projection of sensory neurons.
Development of sensory neural circuits requires concurrent specification of neuron modality, position, and topographic projections. However, little is understood about how controls over these distinct parameters can unify in a single developmental sequence. To address this question, we have used the nociceptive class IV dendritic arborization neurons in the Drosophila larval body wall as an exc...
متن کاملSensory and multisensory responses in the newborn monkey superior colliculus.
Superior colliculus (SC) neurons have the ability to synthesize information from different sensory modalities, resulting in enhancements (or depressions) of their activity. This physiological capacity is, in turn, closely tied to changes in overt attentive and orientation responses. The present study shows that, in contrast to more altricial species, many deep layer SC neurons in the rhesus mon...
